Ibanda Kyerwa National Park and Rubondo Island National Park

The Park is located in the northwest of Tanzania where it borders Rwanda to the west and shares a short boundary with Akagera National Park. The actual Park boundary is the Kagera River. To the north, the Park shares a boundary with Uganda where again the actual boundary is the Kagera River.

Ibanda Kyerwa National Park is said to be one of the best destinations for hunting in Tanzania. 

Rubondo Island National Park is the largest island national park in Africa, Rubondo offers a truly off-the-beaten-track. Rubondo Island lies in the southern part of Lake Victoria (the second-largest lake in Africa, after Lake Tanganyika). The island is 26km in length, and varies in width from 3km to 10km.

Ibanda Kyerwa National Park and Rubondo Island National Park – 5 days / 4 nights

The Wildlife Plains game; in particular, topi, eland, impala, waterbuck, reedbuck, and bushbuck are everywhere. Roan, that large and dramatic antelope is present in large herds. Herds of buffalo are also common. There is currently no lion in Ibanda, and so the main large predators are leopard and hyena. Hippos and crocodiles abound in the Kagera River and in some of the lakes and swamps.

Rubondo Island National Park offers a vast variety of habitats for wildlife including; velvet monkeys, genet cats, spotted-necked otters, hippos, crocodiles, chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes and marshes bucks. The park is also home to a variety of bird species. The trip will cover you with wildlife and natural vegetation experience.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Bukoba – Ibanda Kyerwa National Park

Morning pickup from Bukoba town, you will drive approximately 220Kms to Murongo village; you will further drive another 3 Kms to enter Ibanda Kyerwa National Park. Alternatively, you can fly from Bukoba to Ibanda Kyerwa Airstrip within the Park. Enjoy your game drive within Ibanda Kyerwa National Park. 

During your game drive expect to see Roan Antelopes, leopard, hyena and Hippos, crocodiles and Topi, Eland, impala, waterbuck, Reedbuck, bushbuck and buffaloes.

You will retire your day for dinner and overnight accommodation as per arrangements; se optional accommodation below; 

Standard Accommodation:  Camping in Ibanda Kyerwa National Park (all meals included)

Comfort Accommodation: Bufumbira Hotel in Murongo (all meals included)

DAY 2: Full day Game drive and activities in Ibanda Kyerwa National Park

Early Morning after breakfast, with an armed Ranger, you will go for a walking game safari experience in Ibanda Kyerwa National Park. Depending on your interest, you can go from a 4 to 5 hours walking safari or 2 to 3 hour walking game safari. 

You will have an afternoon at leisure or go for a cultural tour around Ibanda Kyerwa National park villages. 

You will have dinner and overnight accommodation stay at your lodge / camps as per arrangements. See below options;

DAY 3: Ibanda Kyerwa National Park – Bukoba – Muganza - Rubondo National Park

Early morning after breakfast from your hotel, you will drive to Muganza village which is approximately 3 hours away by car. This village is the embarkation point to Rubondo Island National Park. 

Having been organized by the Rubondo management authority, they will have the boat ready for the 30 minute boat-ride from Muganza Village across to Rubondo Island National park.   After check-in to your camp / hostel/lodge, you will indulge yourself in the life of Rubondo Island National Park activities. 

You can go for a guided hiking / walking safari around the dense forest of Rubondo Island where you can get to see a lot of wildlife. Alternatively go for the organized game drive. You can expected to see; hippo, bushbuck, vervet, sitatunga, crocodiles, elephants, chimpanzee, giraffe, black and white colobus monkeys, suni and grey parrots, buffalos, bushpig, hyrax, warthog and large spotted genet cat. 

After your day 1 activities on Rubondo Island National Park, you will retire your day for dinner and overnight accommodation as per arrangements.

Day 4: Full day at Rubondo Island National Park

After breakfast from your camp/hostel/lodge, you will go on with the arranged activities for the day. This includes, game drives in Rubondo National park, boating trip around Rubondo Island, sport fishing at extra costs. Alternatively, you can just sit back and relax with all the beach leisure that Rubondo Island has got to offer to the visitors. 

You will retire your day for dinner and overnight accommodation as per arranged accommodation. See below options;

Day 5: Depart Rubondo Island National Park – Mwanza Airport

Morning after breakfast from Rubondo Island, you will embark on your boat and cross Lake Victoria to get to Muganza Village where you will meet your driver and drive to Mwanza Airport for your next destination. You will leave Africa but Africa will never leave you!
