 Mt. Kilimanjaro trekking Umbwe Route

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Mt. Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones, Mawenzi, Shira and Kibo. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct but Kibo, the highest peak, is dormant and could erupt again.

The Umbwe route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach and it’s the most challenging route on Mt Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct climb. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on Mt Kilimanjaro.

Tour Overview:

Mt. Kilimanjaro trekking Umbwe Route – 8 days / 7 nights

Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct route which is based in the south and is said to be the most scenic and difficult one offered on Kilimanjaro.

Main reason that the Umbwe route is considered to be very hard is its steepness in the first two days, which is extremely muddy.  Although the traffic on this route is low, the chances of success are also low. This route is only recommended for experienced and well-trained climbers.

This day the path gets steeper on this section, as you get out of the forest along the Umbwe ridge the route descends slightly to the Barranco camp situated in the valley. You will notice the camp is pretty busy. This is because you will be joining hikers from the Machame, Lemosho and Shira Route here. Therefore the population will be bigger.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (3963Meters) - Barafu Camp (4640Meters)

Our day starts by descending into the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical, but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley, which is our last stop for fresh water before the summit. Scree now forms the terrain as we walk through arid and desolate land towards Barafu camp.

Day 6:Barafu Camp (4640Meters) - Uhuru Peak (5895Meters) - To Mweka Camp (3100Meters)

The hike from Stella to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and as far as hikes go not very difficult. The altitude makes the hike long and tiring. Another hour’s walking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Mweka Camp for a long well-earned rest.
