Spice Farm Tour & Prison Island Tour 

The Spice Tour is one of the most popular excursions in Zanzibar, the Spice Island. Zanzibar was one of the world’s leading producers of spices such as clove, nutmeg and cinnamon. Tour takes you to an organic farm with a wide variety of plants around the year. You don’t just see, you also touch, smell and taste.

Once on the Prison Island, you have the opportunity to feed and pet the tortoises, if you have time you may also like to take a stroll through the forested interior where you will see a wide variety of birds, colorful peacocks, bats, and beautiful butterflies. Spice Farm Tour; A spice tour is a wonderful way of exploring the countryside around Stone Town and Zanzibar’s rural communities. Indeed no trip to Zanzibar can be considered complete without a visit to one of our carefully selected spice farms.

For centuries Zanzibar’s cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and other spices, medicinal and ornamental plants, as well as tropical fruits attracted traders across the Indian Ocean. This three to four hour tour will seduce your senses with a mixture of various smells, tastes and textures.

Prison Island Tour;

In 1893, Lloyd Mathews built the prison. The prison idea was to send violent criminals from the Tanganyika mainland to Prison Island. The Prison Island Earning its name as a former prison for slaves and a quarantine station for Zanzibar and the mainland, nowadays the island gives you the chance to escape for some peace and quiet. 

The island lies just off the Old Stone Town, it is also home to giant land tortoises that were imported from Seychelles in the late 19th century.

Now it is more commonly known as a home of Zanzibar’s Giant Aldabra Tortoise colony, some of which are over a hundred years old! This endangered species came to Zanzibar as a gift from the government of the Seychelles.

Itinerary

The tour starts with a pick up from the Hotel at 09:00hrs (depends on your hotel location).

Begin your private tour to Spice Farm. Discover how these islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. For this reason, the Zanzibar Archipelago, together with Tanzania’s Mafia Island, is sometimes called the “Spice Islands”. 

 

There are many spice farms in Zanzibar and for the next portion of the tour; you will visit a real organic spice farm. When you arrive, the spice farm guide will describe how the spices are grown and used as medication and flavor in dishes. See spices like vanilla, cardamom, nutmeg, and many more. It will be possible to touch, smell and taste the spices and herbs directly from plants. 

 

Later, take the opportunity to join a cassava leaf harvest, make coconut milk, and practice some cooking. Even more, a coconut tree climber will pick some fresh young coconut fruits for you to try. 

End the trip with the opportunity to purchase spices from the shop (cash only).

 

After the Spice Farm tour you will visit Prison Island on a full-day tour that’s all about snorkeling and sunbathing on one of Zanzibar’s most pristine beaches.
